SHIFTING CYLINDER
Umberto Boccioni created an opposition between a hollow center, and the depiction of a moving or shifting exterior with his Development of a Bottle in Space. This cylinder was originally made with three bulbous shapes, vertically stacked, and placed on an oval base. The pieces were then "shifted" a maximum of three times in opposite directions away from its hollow center, and painted with a surface pattern that wanders freely across the shifting elements.
